Moving cigars around is where most quality loss happens. Temperature swings in transit, hotel air conditioning, and the physical knocks of travel all take a toll. A decent portable setup prevents most of this without requiring a second bag.
The Core Kit
| Item | Why it matters | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Travel humidor or hard case | Physical protection + humidity retention | Hard-shell with a rubber gasket seal. Holds 3–5 cigars comfortably. |
| Boveda pack (65% or 69%) | Keeps RH stable without any effort | One pack per case is enough for short trips (up to 2 weeks) |
| Double-blade cutter | You need to cut somewhere that is not your home setup | A pocket guillotine is fine — does not need to be the same quality as your home cutter |
| Torch lighter | Windproof, consistent flame | Butane only. Single flame is enough for most outdoor conditions. |
Travelling by Air
A few things to know before flying with cigars:
- Cigars can go in carry-on or checked luggage. There is no restriction on unlit cigars in most countries.
- Butane lighters are allowed in carry-on (one per person, in a clear bag) in most jurisdictions. Torch lighters are banned in carry-on in some countries — check the specific airline and departure country rules.
- Matches are allowed in carry-on but not checked luggage on most airlines.
- Pressurised aircraft cabins are very dry. A flight over 3 hours in a non-humidified case will pull moisture out of your cigars. Use a Boveda pack and seal the case properly.
Keeping It Minimal
If you are travelling for a few days and not carrying your whole rotation, a simpler approach works:
- Put 3–5 cigars in a heavy-duty zip-lock bag with a 65% Boveda pack.
- Carry your regular cutter and a small torch lighter.
- Done.
The zip-lock method is not elegant but it works well for trips under two weeks. The Boveda pack stabilises humidity within a few hours of sealing.
What Not to Pack
- Soft-shell pouches without humidity: Physical protection only — cigars will still dry out.
- Fragile or irreplaceable cigars: Travel introduces risk. Bring cigars you are happy to smoke, not cigars you are ageing.
- More cigars than you will smoke: Every extra cigar is weight and risk. Two or three is usually enough for a short trip.
