A cigar sitting in the wrong conditions for two weeks can lose flavour it took two years to develop. Storage is not optional — it is the difference between smoking what the blender intended and smoking dried-out cardboard.
The Two Numbers That Matter
Every cigar storage decision comes back to two variables: relative humidity (RH) and temperature.
- Humidity: 65–70% RH is the standard target. Below 62% and cigars start to dry out and burn fast. Above 74% and you risk mould and tobacco beetles.
- Temperature: 16–21°C (60–70°F) is ideal. At 24°C and above, tobacco beetle eggs — present in almost all tobacco — can hatch. In Thailand this is a real concern, not a theoretical one.
These two numbers interact. Higher temperatures increase the rate at which tobacco releases and absorbs moisture, making humidity harder to stabilise. The goal is to keep both steady, not just high or low.
Storage Options at Different Commitment Levels
| Option | Cost | Capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boveda pack in a zip-lock bag | Minimal | 5–10 cigars | Short-term (1–2 weeks) |
| Desktop humidor | Low–mid | 25–100 cigars | Regular smokers with a modest rotation |
| Cabinet humidor | Mid–high | 100–500 cigars | Collectors, aging long-term |
| Coolidor (cooler + Boveda) | Low | 200–1000 cigars | Budget solution for large volumes |
| Walk-in humidor | Commercial | Unlimited | Retailers, serious collectors |
What Cedar Actually Does
Spanish cedar is the standard lining for quality humidors, and it is not just tradition. Cedar absorbs and releases moisture slowly, which buffers RH swings. It also imparts a mild secondary flavour over time that complements tobacco, and its natural oils are a mild repellent to tobacco beetles. If your humidor is not lined with cedar, adding cedar trays or sheets helps considerably.
Ageing Cigars: When Time Improves Things
Properly stored cigars generally improve with 1–5 years of age. The fermentation process continues slowly, mellowing harshness and integrating flavours. Full-bodied, high-ligero cigars tend to benefit the most. Light Connecticut-shade cigars are often better fresh — ageing can strip delicacy from them. Storage conditions have to be right for ageing to improve anything; poor storage just accelerates deterioration.
Signs Your Storage Is Off
- Cracked wrapper: Too dry. The tobacco has contracted and split the outer leaf.
- White powder on wrapper: Likely plume (crystallised oils) if it brushes off — benign. If it is fuzzy, that is mould.
- Cigar burns unevenly or runs: Uneven dryness through the filler — inconsistent humidity.
- Strong ammonia smell when opened: Tobacco still fermenting; needs more time at proper RH before smoking.
If you are in Bangkok and do not have a humidor yet, buying a few cigars from us and smoking them within a day or two is more sensible than leaving them in your hotel room. We store everything at the right conditions so you do not have to.
